Plaster Mixers - Buyers Guide

Are you currently on the hunt for the perfect plaster mixer? With our handy buyers guide we aim to help professional plasterers, tradesmen and home DIY-ers to find a plaster mixer that is sufficiently suited to their needs.

Plaster Mixers for Heavy Materials

Plaster mixers are diverse tools, and can also be used for mixing other substances such as resins, paints and mortars. If you require a plaster mixer that is able to mix thicker mixtures you will need to make sure you choose one with a powerful enough motor. The speed of the motor is measured in rpm, for heavy mixtures a motor of 560rpm and above is sufficient. You may also benefit for a dual paddle plaster mixer with a slightly lower rpm. For example, this dual paddle mixer from Refina has a mixing speed of 400rpm however its dual paddle function allows it to efficiently mix heavy materials as well as plasters.

D Handle Plaster Mixers

Plaster mixers typically come in two handle shapes ‘D’ and ‘h’. ‘D’ handle plaster mixers are single handle mixing tools designed to give the user a comfortable mix position. Usually, mixers that are designed for smaller batches and lighter materials will have a ‘D’ handle.

‘H’ Handle Plaster Mixers

Plaster mixers with ‘H’ handles allow the user full control when mixing large batches of heavy materials. ‘H’ handle mixers are also suitable for mixing less heavy materials and ensure a comfortable mixing position. The ‘H’ design also helps to protect the mixer from wear and tear and damage.

Plaster Mixer Noise Level

We expect that a certain noise level is produced when using a power tool, however we expect this is a safe and comfortable level. Some power tools may be louder than others depending on their function. Refina Plaster Mixers display their noise level output in the specifications which allows us to make an informed decision when choosing a product. Noise level is measured in DBA and to find out how loud your power tool will be it helps to know the DBA of common sounds. For example a household vacuum cleaner is around 70 DBA, whereas a rock concert is around 120 DBA. Most plaster mixers have a DBA of around 70-75 making them slightly louder than a standard vacuum.

Other Features:

Soft/slow start

Some plaster mixers will have a ‘soft start’ variable speed. This feature helps to reduce splatter when mixing.

Plaster Paddle

The paddle of your plaster mixer needs to be fit for the task at hand: small paddles will not be sufficient to mix thick materials whereas a paddle that is too large could result in a lumpy, inconsistent mix. To ensure your paddle is up to task check the manufacturer’s guidelines. The most common type of plaster paddle is the spiral paddle, which is available in various sizes. Your plaster mixer should allow you to change paddles when required.
